So I bought a 7950 or something else?

Postby CrackerWacker » Wed Aug 20, 2014 4:00 pm

On craigslist a female was selling a video card, and see posted it as a 7950 that belong to her ex (at least what I was told)

I went to the house and I thought they put the r9 290 heatsink on it (Because thats the label on it) So I bought it home and hooked it up and downloaded 7950 drivers and it turned into r9 290.

So I guess I bought an R9 290 for $50 or is it a bad card/driver?

Looks like it's a newer version of the same card. Congrats. Good deal =)

http://www.overclock.net/t/1464926/new-radeon-7950-reported-as-r9-200-series

[...]7950 was on the same lines as the 7970 (R9 280x) then drivers may see it as R9 200 series, but if you check out the bios its a 7950 bios and 7000 series support 11.2 with drivers updates. Just like if you had a 7970 or 7950 it would come up as 7900 series on GPU-Z.

To my knowledge, AMD wants to do away with Radeon XXXX naming system, in favor of RX-XXX(X) naming system.

http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/amd-li ... -xxxx.html

If the woman was selling the card that was her ex's, more than likely she just got the labeling wrong.
So, as Gantt said, you my friend bought an AMD R9 290 ($400-$500) for next to nothing.

It's not a bad card although I pefer a more high end card like the GTX 670Ti or something similar, but even though this is a midrange it is a nice one

I just noticed the memory size and that's a bit of a give away. I think the 7950 topped out at 3Gb but the 290 is 4Gb standard.

:o

Well at 1080p ultra for BF4 I get 100fps. Which is more than the 7950...

Edit: After looking up the stickers on the PCB of the GPU I do have an R9 290.

Anyone know of a good cooler for this card? I love the card.

A replacement mounted cooler, or sleeve cooler?

I've never replaced a GPU with a new air cooler, I always go liquid. On top of that I've only used one thing, NZXT G10 VGA bracket. It mounts a fan bracket to your card, then offers a space that allows for a lot of the big name closed loop coolers that have the circular waterblock to be mounted. Looking at G10 compatibility, some variations have a thicker board and might require longer screws but other than that, NZXT says it'll fit a r9 290.

http://www.nzxt.com/product/detail/138- ... acket.html $30
Zalman and corsair make a fairly inexpensive 140mm cooler at like ~$50

If you're looking for air cooling, sorry.

I'll just stay with stock I guess. If anything I will open the window during winter.

If it has a stock cooler (those cases with the single fan) then just a add a sleeve cooler, those things do a great job of moving air and dissipating heat around the card. If it has an aftermarket cooler where it has fans spanning across the card then you should be good without anything extra. If the case interior generally gets hot then maybe more case fans? Unless you're overclocking it and no other temp problems arise, then it should last you. If it runs extremely hot already, then it probably needs to be cleaned as it sounds like a used card.

It looks very clean and it is a reference cooler. After googling people say they up to 95c. Which is what mine does.

I don't want any liquid in my machine, and I have no idea what you mean by a sleeve cooler.

That requires a form of liquid in my system.

Honestly Cracker, It gets pretty hot in my room and I run my GTX 670 on its reference cooler without a hitch. I have had it for like 2 years now. I think you will be fine as long as you have good airflow in your case.
