Monitor Suggestions

Postby BZ-MikeH » Mon Dec 28, 2015 12:20 am

Looks like my 2nd monitor is about to hit the bed so I'm in the market for a new one. Anyone have any suggestions? I'd like to stick around the $250 mark.

So much choice now..

Bootie and I are big fans of 120 and 144hz monitors. If you can get a Freesync (AMD) or Gsync (Nvidia) one to suit your card then all the better.

Do some digging Stateside, there must be some options to suit your budget over there.

What resolution are you looking for...? 1920 x 1080? 4k?
Preference on monitor maker? BenQ? HP? Samsung?
Picky about response time?
60,120, 144 hz?

No preference on maker really, I've had everything from Samsung, Asus, to Chinese made monitors and have had good luck with all of them and bad.

I'm not sure whats better to look for 4k or higher hz?

Can you ever run 4k with your current computer specs? There is an argument that you can notice the difference between 60 hz and 120 hz, but between 120 and 144hz there is no change in what you can perceive. I've tried both (60/120) and am quite fine with 60 hz.

You'd definitely need a crossfire setup, a 980, a 390 or another various card to get decent FPS at 4k.

Do you have your hardware listed anywhere?

Buy an Asus VG248QE (shop around, there is one at B&H at least for 259.99). They are 144 Hz at 1080p with 24" screen. The colors are a bit meh until you tweak them, but there are a few really good guides out there to do so pretty quickly. I've done a fair bit of research on good gaming monitors twice now in recent years, and have come back to this one both times after considering 4K, 1440p, 27", and other 120-144 Hz options.

As was mentioned, you will need a beast computer to run 4K, but 144 Hz will be so purdy the first time you see it and you can run it on the rig you have now (graphics settings depending to get the full effect of high FPS).
